Dutchmen Tripped Up by Glens Falls

By: Ryan Murphy

The Dutchmen and Golden Eagles face off Friday night in Albany.

The Albany Dutchmen lost their second straight game, a 10-4 loss to the Glens Fals Golden Eagles on Friday at Bob Belizzi Field. The Dutchmen never led for the second game in a row, surrendering runs in the first two innings to fall in a hole, similar to Thursday’s game at Mohawk Valley.

Glens Falls took a 2-0 lead in the top of the opening inning, as Brian Fay (Siena) drove in a pair of runs with two outs in the inning to put Glens Falls in front, a lead they would not relinquish.

Albany had an answer in the bottom of the first, when a single from Cameron Miller (Baylor) scored Nick Jewett (Trinity University). The Dutchmen nearly had another previous run, but Adam Lee (Lipscomb) was thrown out at the plate on a Jewett single.

The lead was re-extended by the Golden Eagles in the second inning, with two more runs coming in to score. A double from Brennan Price (Felician) plated Mark Powell (Bucknell), and a single from Garrett Bernardo (Anderson) scored Price and made the Glens Falls lead 4-1.

For the second inning in a row, the Dutchmen answered two runs from Glens Falls with one of their own. A double from Will Miller (College of the Albemarle) did the damage in the second, allowing Justin Brock (Franklin Pierce) to score.

JQ Folena (Cabrillo) drove in the next run for Glens Falls, a two-out single that brought Bernardo in for the run, extending the lead to 5-2 in the fourth inning.

Again, the Dutchmen answered a Golden Eagles run in the bottom half of the inning with one of their own. In the fourth, a Lee single scored a run, and Demetrius Webb (Indiana) was caught trying to score to end the inning.

The fifth inning again saw the two teams trade runs. Glens Falls scored in the top half on a two-out single from Bernardo, and the Dutchmen rallied when Jewett clubbed a triple, and came in on a groundout from Cameron Miller.

Albany had a golden opportunity to strike in the seventh inning, as the Dutchmen put the opening three hitters on to load the bases. However, a fielder’s choice, a strikeout, and a groundout ended the threat, and the lack of runs in this inning would prove costly.

Glens Falls broke the game open in the top of the eighth inning, scoring four runs to account for the final 10-4 score. The runs were scored on a single from Nick Bernardo, a two-run single from Powell, and a wild pitch.

The winning pitcher was Ben Brown (Coker College), and the losing pitcher for the Dutchmen was Jose Hernandez (Dean College).

Albany takes to the road on Saturday for a battle with the Elmira Pioneers. The Dutchmen return home on Sunday, facing the Adirondack Trail Blazers in a doubleheader beginning at 5:05. The Dutchmen will be hosting a fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and many great prizes will be available to win. It is also a Family Funday, where $14 buys two adult tickets, two youth tickets, and four food vouchers.
