Albany Falls to Glens Falls in Rivalry OpenerBy: Ryan Murphy The Albany Dutchmen surrendered a run in the top of the ninth inning, and dropped the opening game of the Subway Summer Series to the Glens Falls Dragons, 2-1, on Wednesday night at Bob Bellizzi Field in Albany. Pinch-hitter Rich Gugliemi (Saginaw Valley State) was hit by a pitch with one out, and pinch-runner Matthew Flynn (Saint Anslem College) advanced to second when Ryan Dodge (Nova Southeastern) was also hit on the shoulder. A base hit from Joseph Libio (Florida Memorial) scored Flynn for what would prove to be the game-winning run. The Dutchmen threatened in the bottom of the ninth, as Hunter Boose (Georgia Regents) walked and advanced to third after a phenomenal at-bat leading to a single from Slayton Vaughan (Oral Roberts). However, Albany was unable to score with runners on first and third, as Gilberto Torres (Nova Southeastern) got the final two outs and earned the victory. The game was scoreless through seven innings, due to the great efforts of the starting pitchers. Glens Falls’ Alex Yarem (Campbell) took a no-hitter into the eighth inning, which was broken up by a Dominic DiCaprio (Rice) single. Albany righty Chris Amorosi went 7.1 scoreless, working out of jams in the second and sixth innings. The Dragons scored the first run of the game in the top of the eighth inning, which began with a single from Danny Oliveri (Triton). He would come around to score on back-to-back passed balls. Albany’s Mitchell Cooksey (Anderson) took the loss. Albany would even the game in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, DiCaprio singled to break up the no-hitter. A walk to Mike Fitzsimmons (Ole Miss) and a hit-by-pitch off Tyler Nelin (George Mason) loaded the bases, and Connor Van Caugherty drew a walk on a 3-1 pitch to tie the game. A fielders choice would allow Glens Falls to escape the inning without further damage. The Dutchmen and Dragons will reconvene Thursday at East Field in Glens Falls, as Albany looks to go back above .500. The Dutchmen are back at home on Friday for the team’s first matchup with the Amsterdam Mohawks. Gametime is set for 7:05, and the first 500 fans to the field will receive Dutchmen magnet schedules courtesy of AAA Hudson Valley. The popular Baseball Bingo Promotion will also be available. |
