After hitting .524 in the second week of the season, Trace Tyre (Ole Miss) has been named the Spotlight Player of the Week.

Tyre helped lead his team to a 5-1 week knocking in four RBI’s, scoring four runs, adding two doubles while racking up 11 hits in 21 at bats.

Tyre, who red shirted his freshman year at Ole Miss says watching his older teammates throughout the season has helped him get off to a hot start this summer.

“I just like try to repeat what they do good and don't do what they do bad,” Tyre said.

Head coach Nick Davey says Tyre has been successful because he has finally been able to see playing time and has taken full advantage of it.

“I just think he’s a high ability guy, you know he’s a very talented player and was just chomping at the bit to get his reps, and once he had his opportunity he just took off,” Davey said.

Tyre has appeared in all 13 games for the Dutchmen this season and is hitting .409 with seven runs, six RBI’s and five doubles. Tyre has the best average on the team and the second best in the league.

Coach Davey says it will be tough to ever sit Tyre if he keeps playing the way he has.

“He forces me to play him every day, you know I mean he’s the type of kid that doesn't want a day off and I love those kids,” Davey said. “He wants at bats and you know we want him in our line up as much as we can.”

But Tyre is active off the field too, he spoke to Chatham elementary students for career day and volunteered for the New York State Special Olympics this past weekend at Siena College.

Tyre says if he keeps playing team baseball, he and the rest of the 10-3 Dutchmen will continue to win ball games.

“The key to success has just been playing baseball the way it’s supposed to be played, moving runners over and not being selfish,” Tyre said.
