Three Homers not Enough in Loss at DiamondDawgsBy: Griffin Malcolm LITTLE FALLS, N.Y. - The Albany Dutchmen (16-13) fell to the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs (20-10) in a back-and-forth effort, by a score of 8-7. The Dutchmen got off to a perfect start in the first inning, with the first three batters reaching base, and then Ubaldo Lopez (Dartmouth) clearing the bags with a grand slam for his fourth home run of the summer. The power continued in the third behind the bat of Cameron Masterman (Louisville), who made the score 5-0 on a home run. The DiamondDawgs got on the board in the bottom-half of the inning, with a two-out single by Ryan Toohers (Villanova). Toohers continued to produce in the fifth, by driving in Joseph Castellanos (UMass Lowell) to make the score 5-2. The next batter, Austin Pollack (Manhattanville) brought in two more runs with a double, and then scored himself on an error: one of six made by the Dutchmen in the game. The DiamondDawgs scored again in the sixth and seventh behind a fielder’s choice by Alexis Monge-Rodriguez (Barry), and a Drew Fureno (Le Moyne) RBI single, bringing the score to 7-5. In the eighth, Griffen Herrera (Asuza Pacific) brought the game within one with a solo home run. However, Toohers promptly responded with a homer of his own to increase the lead back to two, at 8-6. Herrera singled in a run in the ninth, but the Dutchmen ultimately fell short, as Alexis Calderon (Manhattan) earned the save. Albany starter, Ryan Greco (SUNY Brockport), went 4 and two thirds innings, allowing three earned runs over five hits, and seven strikeouts. He was relieved by Alex Schwartz (RCBC) who only retired one batter, and surrendered two runs. Nick Bird (UAlbany) pitched next, lasting 2 and two thirds innings, giving up one run on two hits. DiamondDawgs’ starter, Erislandy Rives (Barry), was chased after the Lopez grand slam. Jon Hardy entered the game next, throwing five innings of one-run ball, and striking out four. Collin Nye (Union) recorded five outs, while giving up one run. The Dutchmen are off tomorrow before taking on the Amsterdam Mohawks in an away contest on Thursday night.
