(AMSTERDAM)-- The Albany Dutchmen fell to the Amsterdam Mohawks at Shuttleworth Park on Thursday night, losing by a score of 5-4.
The Dutchmen opened up the scoring with two in the second, as Matt Bergevin (Fairfield) scored on an Anthony Raimo Jr. (Rhode Island) groundout, and Chance Checca (Herkimer) scored on a Caden Shapiro (Princeton) single. The teams traded runs in the fourth before Albany added another in the sixth, as Ben Lavery (St. John Fisher) scored on a Tyler Young (Lehigh) fielder’s choice.
Albany took their 4-1 lead into the bottom of the eighth, before Amsterdam cleared the bases on an error with runners going with two strikes and two outs to tie the game at four. Nick Giamarusti (Pittsburgh) would score from second on a groundout in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.
Danny Kelleher (Hofstra) and Andrew Cubberly (Quinnipiac) were dominant for the Dutchmen on the mound, as the two combined to throw 7.1 innings, allowing just three hits, two runs, and two walks, while striking out four. Kelleher sports a 0.90 ERA and 0.70 WHIP in his three appearances on the mound.
Shapiro paced the offense, going 2-for-4 with his RBI and run. The Dutchmen’s 13 runners left on base would prove to be the difference in the ballgame.
Albany looks to kick off the month of July on a high note, returning home to host the Glens Falls Dragons on Friday and Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs on Saturday. Each contest is slated for a 6:35 first pitch at Dutchmen Field.
