Dutchmen Come Up Short in Saugerties

By: James Calderon

(SAUGERTIES, NY): After splitting a doubleheader on Saturday, the Albany Dutchmen (4-4) traveled south to square off against the Saugerties Stallions (2-3). A tight, well-fought game by both teams, it unfortunately was not the result that the Dutchmen were searching for as they fell short 3-2.

As the first hitter of the game, Vince Venditti (The College of Saint Rose) came out of the gate hot as he smoked a ball down the third base line and stole second base on the very next pitch. However, it would be the Stallions who struck first as they managed to get the first run of the night off of a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning although this would be the only run that starting pitcher Jacob Mauer (Lafayette College) would allow in his five solid innings of work.

Despite a strong performance from the Dutchmen pitching staff, the offense would appear to struggle throughout the night. JT Vance (Mississippi College) would lead off the fifth inning with a stand up double and Will Plattner (Ole Miss) would drive him in after a hard line-drive to center field for the Dutchmen’s first run of the night. This constituted half of the Dutchmen’s runs of the night with the other half coming from the Stallions conceding one run while turning a double play- as the sixth inning began with the bases loaded and no outs. After the top of the sixth, Albany saw themselves with a 2-1 lead. Dutchmen relievers would later allow two additional runs which would guide the Stallions to earning their second win of the season.

Fortunately, the Dutchmen will be able to redeem themselves tomorrow at home as they again play the Saugerties Stallions with first pitch being set for 6:35pm. If you are unable to make it to Dutchmen Field for tomorrow’s game, be sure to tune into the broadcast on Facebook Live.
