Drew Tolson (Baylor), the 2014 Dutchmen Pitcher of the Year, fires a strike.
November 23, 2015
Another group of former Dutchmen had top-level performances during fall baseball exhibitions, both at the plate and on the mound. This week’s spotlight looks at Dutchmen from seasons past.
Drew Tolson, Baylor- Tolson, Albany’s 2014 Pitcher of the Year, started two games in the Baylor Green-Gold World Series for Team Green, earning the win in a clinching game three. The righty, who was Baylor’s Opening Day starter last season, pitched well in a no decision in the opening game of the five-game set, which was won by his Team Green. In the third game, Tolson worked four innings without surrendering a run to earn the win and clinch victory for his team.
Cam Miller, Baylor- Miller joined his 2014 Dutchmen teammate on Team Green for Baylor, making an offensive impact in multiple games for Team Green. In the second game, Miller extended the game with a two-out RBI single, which allowed the next hitter to record an RBI single for the victory. His best game came in Game Three, which saw him drill a three-run home run in the first inning, leading Green to an 11-0 victory to clinch the series.
Brian Ruhm, Cal Baptist- Ruhm, who spent his 2013 summer in Albany, was an offensive leader for Team Blue in Cal Baptist’s Fall Classic. In the opening four games, Ruhm drove in a pair of runs and scored another despite his team dropping three of the four games. His biggest effort, however, came in the final game. He bashed a sixth-inning solo home run, and then drilled a walk-off grand slam to give his team an 8-6 victory.
Adam Lee, Lipscomb- The first baseman from the 2014 Dutchmen roster, who is entering his senior season for the Bisons, had solid production over two games despite his team falling in Lipscomb’s fall classic. In the first game, Lee drove in a run on a single in the game’s final inning as a rally fell short. In the second contest, the senior went 2-for-3 but could not manage the victory, punishable with late night field work and a hot dog dinner — the winning team is awarded with a steak dinner.
Tyler Orris, Millersville- A star for the 2013 Dutchmen, Orris has established himself as a lynchpin for the Marauders. During Millersville’s Black and Gold Series, the shortstop was an offensive leader as his Gold Team won all three games of the series. Orris had five hits in 11 at-bats, driving in four runs and stealing two bases during the series. His top performance came in the second game, in which he drove in three of his runs with a pair of hits.
Austin Goeke, Wagner- Goeke received the starting nod for Team Black during Wagner’s Fall World Series, and worked a masterful performance en route to Team Black winning the game 5-1 and claiming the series. In the seven-inning game, the 2014 Albany pitcher did not allow a run, and the opposing Team Black only managed three base runners during his time on the mound.
Nick DiLeo, Wagner- DiLeo, who joined Goeke on Team Black, was one of four pitchers that relieved the righty during the clinching Game Two. DiLeo, who played with Goeke on the 2014 Dutchmen, joined the other three relievers in allowing just one run en route to the victory. The Seahawks also raised over $12000 for the program via their annual Hit-a-Thon.
Anthony Marks, Coastal Carolina- Marks, a 2013 Albany standout, hit leadoff for the Chanticleers as they took on the Czech Republic National Team in early October to raise money for a former player battling lymphoma. Marks scored the only Coastal Carolina run by drawing a leadoff walk and eventually coming around to score on a single. Fellow Albany alum Zach Remillard got the start at third base, reaching base once during the game, which was won by the Czechs, 5-1.
Mike Triller, Clemson- The 2012 Dutchmen outfielder, who is entering his final season with the Tigers, suited up for the Purple during Clemson’s Orange and Purple Scrimmages. Triller recorded a pair of hits during the first game of the three-game set despite a 10-3 defeat at the hands of the Orange. The Orange Team would go on to sweep the series, 3-0.
