Dutchmen Ink Two Baylor Bears

By: Ryan Murphy

The Albany Dutchmen, throughout their eight years of existence, have been able to cultivate relationships with major collegiate programs. These programs have come to trust sending players to Albany, and Dutchmen fans have been able to connect with players from these major schools. Over the past three seasons, the Dutchmen have seen four players from Baylor University come to the Capital City and are pleased to welcome two more for the 2016 season- pitchers Troy Montemayor and Drew Robertson.

Montemayor, a native of San Antonio, Texas, comes to Albany as one of Baylor's top relief pitchers. In 2015, Montemayor made 20 bullpen appearances, third on the team behind a pair of seniors. He logged 43.2 innings as a freshman, recording a 4.95 ERA with 26 strikeouts. The righty struck out at least one hitter in nine consecutive outings during his freshman campaign. Thus far this season, Montemayor has served as the Bears' closer, working four scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and his first career save in four appearances. In his most recent appearance, he combined with former Dutchmen signee Kyle Ott and 2015 Albany pitcher Blake Allen on a 5-1 victory over Sam Houston State.

In high school, Montemayor was a MaxPreps second team All-American, as well as being named a first team All-State selection and the player of the year in San Antonio. Montemayor posted a 24-6 record with 12 saves during his high school career. The Reagan HS graduate is also the second Albany player to be an alumni of the Little League World Series, joining 2014 pitcher Josh Ferry (Illinois). Montemayor helped McAllister Park American Little League to the United States Championship Game in 2009, and the then-13 year old righty won his only start on the mound in Williamsport.

Montemayor will be joined by fellow righthander Drew Robertson, a junior from Tyler, Texas. Robertson is in his first season with the Bears after playing junior college baseball in his hometown at Tyler Junior College. At Tyler, he helped the Apaches to the NJCAA Division III World Series in 2015, and was the winning pitcher in the national championship game. In 2015, Robertson allowed just 11 hits in 26 innings, striking out 36 hitters to just nine walks. He posted a 3-0 record and a 2.77 ERA. In 2016, Robertson has been great out of the bullpen for the Bears. The righty has allowed just two hits and no runs in his first two appearances.

Even before his time at Tyler JC, Robertson was no stranger to championship moments, winning three state championships at The Brook Hill School. Robertson was the winning pitcher in the 2012 state title game, and drove in two runs at the plate in 2013. He was an All-District and All-State selection during his time in high school, as well.

The Dutchmen are happy to continue the tradition of Baylor Bears coming to Albany, a tradition that includes players such as Sean Spicer, Drew Tolson, Cam Miller, and Blake Allen. The Dutchmen hope Montemayor and Robertson continue the success of Bears in the Capital City.
