East Defeats West in All-Star Game

A record attendance showed up to Bellizzi Field on Wednesday night to see the PGCBL showcase their best.

The East Division All-Stars defeated the West Division All-Stars in the 2016 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game presented by CSEA behind great performances that were aplenty on Wednesday night at Bob Bellizzi Field.

Robbie Knightes (Glens Falls Dragons, St. John’s University) would be named the All-Star Game MVP, going two-for-three with a run and pair of RBI’s that came on his home run that be blasted over the right field wall in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Evan Giles (Indiana State University) would get the ball for the East All-Stars in front of his home crowd, going his scheduled one inning of work getting a pair of flyouts and a foulout to right field, only allowing one walk.

JJ Shimko (University of South Carolina Upstate) hit second playing left field for the Blake Nation led squad, going one-for-four with a run. Justin Childers (Ohio Dominican University) would be the other Dutchmen position player in the game, going 0-for-two with a walk in his All-Star Game appearance.

Jeff Rivera (University of the Cumberlands) would be the first Dutchmen to see bullpen out of the ‘pen, allowing two hits and a run (earned) in his one inning of action. Troy Montemayor (Baylor University) would be the final Dutchmen to enter the game, getting a strikeout in his two-thirds inning of work, closing out the top of the ninth with a 9-1 victory.

The Dutchmen were thrilled to host Wednesday’s festivities, hosting a record attendance of 1,482 loud and enthusiastic fans from all across the league, bringing the spotlight to the best the league has to show.

Albany will have tomorrow off to complete their three-day All-Star break, before heading to Amsterdam Friday to look to get rid of the sour taste in their mouth after losing to the Mohawks at Shuttleworth Park in what was the final game before the break.

The Dutchmen return to Bob Bellizzi Field on Saturday, when they host the Glens Falls Dragons in a doubleheader set to begin at 5:05 for Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Night, where the Dutchmen will have a Walk to promote awareness against the disease at 4:45 and a fundraiser to raise money for MS research. It will also be Phillips Hardware Night, where there will be True Value Paint Giveaways and Demos, and a Dutchmen Photo Giveaway of Zach Remillard (Coastal Carolina), Gavin Wallace (Fairfield), and JJ Shimko (USC-Upstate) courtesy of Stannard Photography for the first 200 fans.
