Flames Survive Ninth, Dutchmen Rally Falls Short

By: Tyler Lance

The Dutchmen fall short in this contest after letting up 3 runs in the top of the 8th against the Onondaga Flames

The Onondaga Flames (11-6) emerged victorious by a score of 4-3 in a back and forth contest against the Albany Dutchmen (10-7) by surviving a ninth inning in which Albany loaded the bases with only one out.

Emmett Dunn (Ithaca), who had only started games prior to this contest entered the ninth inning with a one-run lead.  The Dutchmen rallied on a Chase Allen (Limestone) single, a Brandt Holland (North Alabama) single, a wild pitch by Dunn, and an intentional walk to Jon Skidmore (Dallas Baptist).  The opportunity for the Dutchmen to score a comeback win went out the window as Zach Durfee (Siena) popped out to the catcher and Brad Gneiting (Rice) struck out looking after battling his way back from a 0-2 count to a 3-2 count.

The Flames rallied their way back from a three to one deficit as Ricky Sisto (Monroe CC) became the unexpected hero, blasting a go-ahead three run double with two outs off of Deaven Phillips (Ave Maria), who had loaded the bases on a single sandwiched in between two walks.  Phillips looked momentarily like he would get out of the inning, as he struck out Alex Canty (Monroe CC) looking with the bases loaded and one out to record out two of the inning.  Sisto, who had been hitless with 10 strikeouts in his 21 total at bats on the season, then hit the go ahead double.

The game was a pitcher’s duel for most of the evening, as Greg Marino (Stony Brook) and Evan Reichel (St. Lawrence), traded scoreless innings for much of the ballgame.  Marino finished with a no decision after allowing one run on five hits in six innings.

Onondaga struck first in the second inning, as Matthew Carey (Ithaca) hit a soft line drive that barely eluded the glove of the outstretched Trace Tyre (Ole Miss) to bring home the first run of the ballgame.

Albany was unable to answer until the fifth inning, when the Dutchmen’s trademark aggressive base running allowed them to tie the game at one.  Durfee attempted to steal second, as Nick Gallo (Oklahoma State) broke home from third base on the throw to second to score the tying run with Durfee remaining in a rundown long enough for that to happen.

The Dutchmen got their first lead of the game in the seventh inning, as Brant Holland (North Alabama) hit a single down the third base line to score the go-ahead run, and Skidmore laid down a perfect safety squeeze to give Albany a two run lead.

Albany, who has now lost five out of their past six games, will try to regroup tomorrow as they take on the Glens Falls Dragons for the seventh time this season.  The teams have split their six matchups so far on the season.  Tomorrow will mark CDTA Kids in Free Night, as all children will receive free admission.  The first pitch is slated for 5:05 P.M.
