The Albany Dutchmen are ecstatic to welcome back three returning players to Albany this summer: pitchers Greg Marino (Stony Brook) and Jeremiah Burke (Georgetown) as well as outfielder Griffen Herrera (Azusa Pacific).
Greg Marino established himself as a pivotal part of the Dutchmen rotation during the 2017 season, forming a dynamic duo along with PGCBL Pitcher of the Year Matt Pierce (Siena).
The Lake Grove, NY native was the opening night starter for the Stony Brook Seawolves to start their 2018 season and is regarded as one of the Top 10 prospects in the America East conference for the upcoming MLB Draft. In 2018, Marino has started the season strong with 12 strikeouts in 16.1 innings pitched for the Seawolves in four appearances.
In six games started for the Dutchmen, Marino was 2-1 with a 1.67 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 32.1 innings pitched. Marino was also the Dutchmen's starting pitcher in their PGCBL Playoffs Semifinal matchup vs Mohawk Valley, going six innings and only allowing one run on two hits to the eventual 2017 PGCBL champions.
Marino also started in the annual Education Day game versus the Tri-City ValleyCats, a 3-2 victory for the Dutchmen versus the MiLB single-A affiliate of the 2017 World Series Champion Houston Astros.
During his first season with the Dutchmen, Griffen Herrera batted .205 with 12 RBIs in 30 games with Albany. Herrera, a sophomore outfielder, has helped lead Azusa Pacific to the No. 1 ranking in the country in D-2 baseball. The Cougars are currently 24-2 to start their 2018 season. The Dutchmen have strong ties to Azusa Pacific with five former Dutchmen on their current roster.
Before his time with the Dutchmen, Herrera thrived across the country at Glendora High School in Glendora, California. Herrera, a two sport athlete playing both baseball and football, posted over 100 hits during his prep career with a better than .350 batting average.
He scored 77 runs white hitting 47 home runs during his time with Glendora. Herrera was also honored as a 2016 Rawlings Perfect Game Honorable Mention All-American and the California All Region 2nd Team.
Jeremiah Burke started off his Dutchmen career in 2017, finishing the season with a 2.36 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 26.2 innings pitched, while appearing in eleven games for the Dutchmen. The righty from Delmar, NY also walked just four batters all season long.
Burke is currently recovering from a knee injury and is probable to return for the Hoyas in the next three to four weeks.
Before his time with Albany and his collegiate career with the Georgetown Hoyas, Burke was a two-year starter at the La Salle Institute in Albany, serving as a team captain his senior year. He was also a honor roll student.
