Kretzler (Brockport) named Week One Player of the Week sponsored by CDSF
Tom Kretzler (Brockport) has been named the Player of the Week sponsored by CDSF. Kretzler got off to a hot start on the 2021 season, with a .300 average to go with two doubles, two home runs and eight RBIs on the week ending on 6/12/21, which led to him being named the first Player of the Week in the 2021 season. Kretzler carried a .333 batting average with 22 RBIs and a SUNYAC leading 8 home runs in the 2021 season at SUNY Brockport, but most importantly he was an everyday starter.
“I feel like I’m off to such a hot start because I got consistent at bats at school, a lot of guys in this league didn’t see live action or everyday live action at school, and coming in already in the swing of things has helped me,” said Kretzler.
Kretzler says the biggest difference between SUNYAC and PGCBL has been playing every night rather than a couple games every weekend. Players in the PGCBL have to find ways to limit fatigue and soreness, while also working out during the day then playing at night, something Kretzler says is a big part of his new summer routine.
“I’m working out at CDSF a couple times a week, they have me on a full workout plan, I can get in there whenever I want,” Kretzler said.
Kretzler plays with a chip on his shoulder as a Division III player going up against Division I or Division II guys every night, but as he just finished up his graduate year at Brockport, experience is an invaluable asset Kretzler brings to the table.
“My approach has developed a lot since I was the age of some guys in this league, and that has definitely helped me this season,” Kretzler said.
Head Coach Nick Davey speaks very highly of Kretzler as an important piece to the middle of the lineup now and for the remainder of the season, but also praises Kretzler’s leadership role on this Dutchmen squad.
“Tom is a young man that leads by example and is a good influence for a lot of our younger guys at the early stage of the season,” said Davey.
Kretzler is off to an excellent start in the 2021 season leading to his Player of the Week honors, but he has three simple goals for the season, none of which are specific stat based.
“I want to get better as the season goes on, stay consistent, and have fun this summer,” Kretzler said.
Tom Kretzler and the Dutchmen return to action on Monday, June 14th against the Saugerties Stallions at Dutchmen Field at Keenholts Park slated for a 6:35 first pitch.
