David James, Dutchmen right handed pitcher from London, Ontario, and the University of South Carolina Upstate, has been named Dutchmen Week #4 Spotlight Player of the Week presented by Bellini’s Counter. James has also been named East Division Pitcher of the Week by the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball (PGCBL).
James made one appearance this week when he started Tuesday’s game against the Saugerties Stallions. James pitched a gem in that game, going seven innings while only allowing three hits. He racked up five strikeouts and did not walk a single batter.
James talked about what worked so well for him in his start against the Stallions, “I just basically attacked the strike zone early on in the count, and tried to get the hitters to get themselves out to make our defense work, and just put them away with my slider if I got ahead in the count.”
Tuesday’s start dropped James’ ERA down to 0.53 on the season, good for third-best in the entire PGCBL. Throughout the season he has pitched 17 innings, giving up only one run and striking out 16. He has started the season 2-0 across his three starts.
James also was able to talk about his goals for the summer while playing for the Dutchmen, “Adding a sinker into my arsenal and throwing that in to righties, incorporating that with my 4-seam and obviously developing a fourth pitch with the changeup and having all different pitches working at once will definitely help me in the future.”
