Leichman, a sophomore at Cypress CC, comes to the Dutchmen with an unusual amount of experience. Born in Kibbutz Gezer, Israel, Leichman has represented his country in competition around Europe since he made the Juvenile National Team at 10 years old. During his stint with the team, he played in Holland, Poland, Croatia, and Italy, and in 2008 he started for Israel in the European Qualifier. Most recently, Leichman played on Team Israel in the World Baseball Classic qualifier in September. He was one of only 3 amatuers on the team, with 23 current MiLB players and 2 former major leaguers filling out the roster.
The 5’10” right-hander pairs an upper 80s fastball with precision control and solid movement on multiple pitches. His coaches consider him an incredibly smart pitcher, who knows how to change speeds and keep hitters off balance. Which has been on display so far in the 2013 season, where Leichman has made eight appearances out of the bullpen for the Chargers. Throwing 10.1 innings, he has allowed zero runs on only five hits while giving up two walks to his ten strikeouts.
With all that experience behind him, Leichman will be confident taking the ball for the Dutchmen early in the season.
