Torres Named to All-Southern California Team

Cypress College sophomore outfielder Jonathan Torres has been named to the California Community College Baseball Coaches Association’s 2013 Southern California All-Southern California team. Torres was one of 20 players chosen for the All-Southern California squad which was comprised of players from six Southern California leagues in the California Community College Athletic Association. Torres, who has signed a national letter of intent to attend UNLV this fall, was a starting outfielder this spring for the California state champion Cypress College Chargers. He was one of the top offensive performers in the Orange Empire Conference and in the state of California. The first team All-Orange Empire Conference outfielder ended the spring second overall in the state in at-bats (189) and he tied for fourth among all California community college players in overall hits (65). Torres finished among the Orange Empire Conference’s top six in overall hits, at-bats, triples (six), total bases (83), plate appearances (204) and batting average (.344). The sophomore tied a school single-season record for triples and recorded the most by any Cypress player since 1999. Against conference opponents, Torres topped all Cypress swingers with a .361 batting average. 

The Huntington Beach, Calif., native had 19 multi-hit games and recorded at least one hit in 39 of 45 games played. He amassed three separate hitting streaks of eight, 10 and 15 games. The Cypress center fielder ended the season on a career high 15-game hitting streak that began in the regular season and continued through the Southern California regionals and the state tournament. Torres batted .429 (6-for-14) with three RBI and three runs scored in three state tournament games. He had at least two hits in all three contests. Overall, his best offensive performance came during the regular season at eventual state runner-up Fullerton on April 19. Torres went 5-for-5 with two triples, two RBI and three runs scored in a 12-6 win. 

Torres completed his Cypress College career as the school’s all-time leader in triples (eight). Over two seasons, he compiled a .338 batting average, 105 hits, 42 runs scored, 41 runs batted in.
