Week 18: May 23-29By: Ryan Murphy Chris Amorosi, Siena- In the final start of his junior season, Amorosi was dominant for the Saints, guiding Siena to a 5-0 victory and a berth in MAAC championship game. The lefty worked into the eighth inning, and did not surrender a run. Canisius could only manage five hits off Amorosi, who struck out four in his 7.2 innings of work. The semifinal victory saw Amorosi earn his fourth win of the season, and hurl 118 pitches in his best outing of the campaign. Nick Jewett, Trinity- The Trinity Tigers are 2-0 at the D3 World Series, and the 2014 Dutchmen infielder has been at the center of the team's success. In Trinity's 8-0 opener aginst Wisconsin-La Crosse, Jewett went 2-for-4 with two RBI singles. In Sunday's showdown with Cortland State, the first baseman recorded three hits and scored two runs in a 9-7 victory that places Trinity on the doorstep of a national championship. Zach Remillard, Coastal Carolina- Remillard, who is the only three-time PGCBL All-Star in league history, hit .400 with two home runs as the Chanticleers captured the Big South Championship. The infielder drove in six runs during Coastal's four tournament games, and upped his season homer total to 18 as he was named to the All-Tournament team. His home run total is among the top ten in Division I, and could grow as the Chants prepare for a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Jack Gethings, Fairfield- An incoming Dutchmen player, Gethings was named to the All-Tournament team as Fairfield won the MAAC Championship. In three tournament games, the infielder hit .500, driving in two runs and scoring three. His offense included a three hit performance in the conference title game, an 18-2 win over Siena. With the tournament title, Fairfield will play in the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever. Mike Triller, Clemson- Entering the ACC Tournament as the sixth seed, Triller and the Tigers claimed the conference championship with four wins. During the tournament, the 2012 Dutchmen player drove in four runs on six hits, and recorded a .461 batting average. Clemson will also serve as a regional host in next week's NCAA Tournament. Gavin Wallace, Fairfield- Wallace, who is returning to the Dutchmen this year, did his part in Fairfield's conference title. The righty won the opening game of the tournament, a 5-2 win over Manhattan. In the victory, Wallace earned his eighth win over 7.2 innings of work, striking out six hitters. He allowed two runs on seven hits with just one walk, and threw 75 of his 110 pitches for strikes. Dom DiCaprio, Rice- DiCaprio, who was a catcher on the 2015 Dutchmen roster, was one of the keys to Rice advancing to the Conference-USA title game. He finished the CUSA Tournament with the second most hits and was third in batting average. His nine hits led to five runs scored for the Owls, who came within inches of a conference title. Connor Powers, UAlbany- The 2016 Dutchmen outfielder was named to the All-Tournament team, leading the Great Danes to two victories in the America East tourney. Over four games, Powers hit .500 with five runs scored and four RBIs. He went 3-for-4 in UAlbany's opening win over Binghamton, and was on base three times when the Great Danes temporarily staved off elimination against Maine. Thomas Belcher, Indiana- Belcher made two appearances in the Big Ten Tournament for the Hoosiers, and picked up his fifth win of the year. Against Nebraska, Belcher threw two scoreless in Indiana's 6-2 win over the Cornhuskers. He also retired five of the six hitters he faced in Indiana's final game of the season, a loss to Nebraska. Belcher finished the season with a 2.47 ERA and seven saves. Danny Hrbek, Radford- Radford went 2-2 in the Big South Tournament, including elimination victories over Presbyterian and Gardner-Webb. In the four games of the tournament, the 2014 Albany utilityman hit .333 with eight runs scored and five RBIs. His best game of the tourney came in a 16-8 win over Presbyterian, where the junior drove in three runs and scored another three. He hit a triple and a single in the victory. |
