By: Joey Palatsky Dutchmen prepare for game against Mohawk Valley
Tuesday’s Albany Dutchmen game in Little Falls against the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs was the first time the two teams met in the 2021 season. Mohawk Valley claimed the first meeting of the season by a score of 5-0 in a night that featured lots of dominant pitchers.
Sal Fusco (UMass Lowell) fanned 11 batters against his hometown team as the Colonie High grad threw five innings of shutout ball for Mohawk Valley. Four of Mohawk Valley’s five runs came in the first two innings as Tom Kretzler (Brockport) had a rough start but picked up a hit at the plate.
Kretzler’s relievers were brilliant all night as the Albany bullpen featured Arlo Marynczak (Siena) who threw 2.2 innings of shutout ball while allowing two hits. Connor O’Neill (Manhattan) was excellent in his first appearance of the summer for the Dutchmen as O’Neill threw three innings of hitless ball but surrendered a run.
The top two-thirds of the Dutchmen lineup had all four hits as Isaac Humphrey (Louisville), Nick Schwartz (St. John’s), Tom Kretzler (Brockport) and Will Stroud (Azusa Pacific) each had a hit apiece. Albany had seven runners in scoring position on the night, two of which came in a bases loaded and no out 6th inning but the Dutchmen were unable to get a run up on the board.
Albany (1-3) returns to action on the road tomorrow night in Glens Falls at 5:30 for the resumption of a previously postponed game in which the Dutchmen lead 10-1 in the 5th. The continued game will be nine innings and then a full, regularly scheduled game will follow and be played seven innings. Mohawk Valley (2-4) returns home tomorrow night to take on the Auburn DoubleDays.
