The Dutchmen play against the Amsterdam Mohawks

Tuesday, June 29th (Amsterdam, NY) — The Albany Dutchmen got swept in a double header on the road to the first place Amsterdam Mohawks.

It was a long Game 1 as the back and forth affair took over three and a half hours to complete. The two teams combined for 19 total runs in the 11-8 victory for the Mohawks.

Amsterdam struck first in the bottom of the first when Bryce Eblin (Alabama) hit an RBI double to left field to drive in Cam Hill (Kentucky). The Mohawks would add two more runs in the inning, one on an RBI single from Kieth Jones (Washington State) and the other when Brett Coker (Middle Tennessee State) scored on a fielder’s choice to make it 3-0.

The Mohawks would add one more to their lead in the second inning. Hill scored on a unique play in which he stole third standing up on a wild pitch and came around to score before the Dutchmen could recover. This made the score 4-0 for the home side.

That is when the tide’s turned in Albany’s favor. Mike Handal (Fairfield) ignited the Dutchmen offense with a no-doubt solo home run in the third inning to make the score 4-1.

The Dutchmen would then bring two more to the plate in the top of the fourth. Nick Schwartz (St. John’s) and Garrett Wood (Ole Miss) each contributed RBI singles to make the score 4-3.

Albany would then take its first lead of the day in the fifth inning. Logan Beard (Louisville) came to the plate with the bases loaded and cleared them with a double. Driving in three runs to make the score 6-4 Dutchmen.

The lead would not last for long though. Amsterdam struck back in the bottom half of the inning. CJ Funk (Pitt) blasted a two-run home run to tie the game. The Mohawks would tack on two more later that inning to make the score 8-6.

But the Dutchmen would get right back in it though. Handal blasted his second home run of the day, this time a two-run long ball to tie things at 8-8.

The Mohawks would get three runs in the bottom of the sixth however to earn the victory in Game 1. Highlighted by a Ryan Langerman (Maryland) two-RBI single. That would be it for Game 1 as the Mohawks closed things out in the seventh to win 11-8.

It would be more of the same in Game 2 as the Mohawks would win it 6-5. Although neither team would score in the first two innings.

The Mohawks would strike first again however when Hill drove a no-doubt solo shot out of the part to give Amsterdam the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Amsterdam would then add another 4 runs in the third highlighted by a two-RBI single from Funk. The score was 5-0 after three innings of play.

The Dutchmen would bounce right back in the fourth inning though. Tom Kretzler (Brockport) put a charge into a ball for his fourth home run of the year. That home run put the Dutchmen on the board making it 5-1.

There would not be another run until the Dutchmen half of the sixth inning. Kretzler got ahold of another one for his team leading fifth home run of the year to make the score 5-2.

The Mohawks would add their final run of the night in the bottom of the sixth. Hill stole third base and then scored on the same play on a throwing error to make the score 6-2.

The Dutchmen would fight back in the top of the seventh inning. Handal drove in two runs on a single to make the score 6-4. Christian Kondo (Stetson) would later score on a wild pitch to bring the deficit to just one run, but the Dutchmen left the bases loaded to end the night.

Albany dropped Game 2 6-5 to fall to 9-14 on the season. The Dutchmen will be back in action tomorrow night at home when they host the Oneonta Outlaws at 6:35 pm.
