Albany Dutchmen alumni and Cohoes, New York native Zach Remillard will make his Major League debut this weekend after the Chicago White Sox selected his contract on the 40-man roster to take the place of Yoan Moncada, who was put on the injured list.
This will be the first time in his professional career that Remillard has made a major league roster..
The 29-year-old was 10th round pick of the White Sox back in 2016 and has been climbing the minor league ladder since then. He reached free agency after 2022 but re-signed with the Sox on a minor league deal.
2023 marks his third year at Triple-A Charlotte after being first promoted there in May of 2021. In total, Remillard has played 272 games at Triple-A and has a .244/.340/.376 triple slash in 1,047 plate appearances.
He also stole 42 bases over that time, including 13 in 59 games so far this season, while playing all seven of the non-battery positions in the field. That versatility should allow him to serve as a valuable bench piece for the White Sox.
Remillard made three appearancex with the Dutchmen, playing in the 2012 and 2013 seasons, the first one with his older brother Will, and then coming back in 2015 for part of the season while recovering from an injury.
In 2012, the younger Remillard led the team with a .369 average in 39 games, also hitting four home runs, driving in 31 runs and stealing eight bases. That season still has him ranked as the Dutchmen franchise leader in single season batting average (minimum of 80 at-bats) and his 52 hits and 33 runs scored that season are both fourth all time for Albany. He also hit 12 doubles that season, which ranks second all-time in th Dutchmen single-season record books.
Remillard’s promotion to the big leagues also marks the first time in franchise history that two Dutchmen alumni will be on a Major League active roster at the same time after the Toronto Blue Jays also promoted 2014 Albany Dutchmen infielder Ernie Clement.
