Dutchmen Fall After Dragon Quick Start

By: Jason Palatsky

The Dutchmen take on the Dragons on a beautiful night at Bellizzi Field.

The Albany Dutchmen (9-7) fell to the Glens Falls Dragons (3-13) Tuesday night, after a four-run 1st inning gave the Dragons a early lead.

Griffin Neuer (Bellarmine University) led off the game with a single, and a Hunter Szaflarski (Lock Haven University) walk gave the Dragons first and second with no outs. After Jared Gold (Coastal Carolina University) got Nate Cardy (Gannon University) to foul out, back-to-back RBI doubles from Robbie Knightes (St. John’s University) and Ryan Hooper (University of California Davis) gave the Dragons a quick 2-0 lead. Chris Kwitzer (State University of New York at Buffalo) then struck out, but Dan Lowndes (Siena) hit a two RBI double to right center, and it was 4-0 after the first half.

The Dutchmen would respond swiftly though, as after a two out JJ Shimko (University of South Carolina Upstate) single and Kyle Skeels (Coastal Carolina University) two run homer made it a 4-2 game after the 1st inning.

Glens Falls would then have their way with a two out rally in the top of the 2nd, as the Dragons had runners on first and second with two outs, and back-to-back RBI singles from Knightes and Hooper made it a 6-2 game after the top of the 2nd.

The Dutchmen had a quiet bottom of the 2nd before tallying a run in the bottom of the 3rd, as Micah McHugh (University of Mississippi) led off with a double before scoring on a Skeels sacrifice fly to make it a 6-3 ballgame.

The game would remain quiet scoring wise until the top of the 7th, before Glens Falls tacked on another run, after Hooper doubled with 1 out and after reaching 3rd on a Kwitzer single, scored on a Joe Pokrentowski (College of Saint Rose) wild pitch.

The Dutchmen bats remained quiet the rest of the way after the bottom of the 3rd, as the Dutchmen had many opportunities, but left eight total on base this evening.

Skeels led the offense for the Dutchmen, as he went 1-for-2 with his two-run home run, a sacrifice fly to give him three RBI's, a run and a walk. Shimko and McHugh each went 2-for-3 with a run apiece.

After Dutchmen starter Jared Gold had a rough outing of only 1.2 innings, Nick Silber (Rice University) went four strong innings out of the bullpen, allowing only three hits and no runs and walking one, while striking out five Dragon batters.

Glens Falls has the day off tomorrow before heading to Mohawk Valley for a doubleheader on Thursday beginning at 5:05.

The Dutchmen also have the day off tomorrow, before returning home to Bellizzi Field on Thursday night to battle with the Saugerties Stallions at 7:05. Thursday night will be SEFCU Hometown Heroes Night, as all active and retired police officers, firefighters, EMTs, military personnel and their families will get in free thanks to SEFCU, and All You Can Eat for $10.
