Dutchmen End Amsterdam’s 12 Game Winning Streak

By: Tyler Lance

Albany takes game two tonight to break Amsterdam's 12-game winning streak

On a day that featured bonus baseball at Siena Field, the Albany Dutchmen (13-9) lost to the Amsterdam Mohawks (18-7) by a score of 7-4 in 11 innings in the game from June 7th that was suspended due to darkness, but bounced back with a 5-3 win in the regularly scheduled contest.

Game one, which was resumed in the top of the 11th inning, featured the Amsterdam Mohawks immediately jumping on Sean Boyle (Dallas Baptist) for three runs.  John Valente (St. John’s) blooped a double just out of the reach of the diving Zach Durfee (Siena) to start off the inning.  After a Dylan Reynolds (Fairfield) single, Dustin Skelton (Mississippi State) was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Matt Gorski (Indiana) came through with the go ahead single to give Amsterdam the lead by scoring two runs.  A throwing error by catcher Chris Villa (Seton Hall) allowed the other run of the inning to score for a 7-4 lead.

The Dutchmen tried to rally in the bottom of the frame, as they loaded the bases on a single and two walks. With two outs in the inning, Chase Allen (Limestone) struck out against Brandon Reitz (Florida State) to end the ballgame and give Amsterdam a 12 game winning streak.

Game two was a different story for Albany.  Justin Childers (Ohio Dominican) proved to be the hero with the go ahead two-run double off of Holden White (Wake Forest) with one out in the seventh inning, which gave the Dutchmen a 5-3 lead they would never relinquish.

After Albany had taken a 1-0 lead, they ran into trouble in the fifth inning.  Skelton blasted his first home run of the year off of Teddy Paisley (Virginia) to tie the game.  With two outs and Valente on first base following a walk, Jake Mueller (Wake Forest) hit a slow chopped toward third base that Nick Estrella (Azusa Pacific) bobbled for an error.  The Mohawks made the Dutchmen pay for the error, as TJ Collett (Kentucky) hit a two-run single for a 3-1 Amsterdam lead, with both of those runs scoring on the single being unearned.

Albany did not give up, as Estrella hit a solo home run to lead off sixth inning to cut the deficit to one run.  After Childers was hit by a pitch and a short rain delay followed, Brandt Holland (North Alabama) ripped the game tying double off of White.

Estrella carried Albany’s offense throughout much of the game, as he hit an RBI single in the third inning that scored the first run of the game to go along with his solo home run in the sixth.  He now has a team-leading 14 RBI.

The Dutchmen received a much needed quality start from Paisley, as he delivered five strong innings pitched, allowing three runs, only one of which was earned.

Adam Elliot (Louisville) followed up Paisley’s effort with three scoreless innings in his first pitching appearance with the Dutchmen.  Elliot picked up his first victory of the season, retiring the last eight batters he faced.

Justin Bureau (Ave Maria) slammed the door in the ninth inning for his fifth save.  He has a perfect ERA of 0.00.

Albany hits the road for back to back road games on Monday and Tuesday, as they take on Amsterdam and Saugerties respectively.  They return home on Wednesday to take on Saugerties again at 5:05 p.m.  The game will mark Siena Sports Camp Night.
