Dutchmen drop 5-1 Decision at Glens FallsBy: Griffin Malcolm GLENS FALLS, N.Y. - The Glens Falls Dragons (9-8) scored two runs in both the second and third innings and didn’t look back, as they preserved their lead to earn a 5-1 victory over the Albany Dutchmen (9-7). The scoring began in the second after Anthony Vaglica (LIU Post) took third on a passed ball and then crossed home on a double by his LIU teammate, Zach Fritz. Fritz would later score on a wild pitch from Dutchmen starter, Dylan D’Anna (Siena), to put the Dragons up 2-0.
The Dragons continued their scoring in the third, beginning with an RBI double from Phoenix Hernandez (Southern New Hampshire), which plated Nick Kondo (UAlbany). The next batter, Vaglica, would plate center-fielder, Nick Cobb (Malone), on a sacrifice-fly to right field to increase the Dragons’ lead to 4-0.
The Dutchmen would strike back in the fifth inning on a two-out single by Cameron Masterman (Louisville), scoring his Louisville teammate, Lucas Dunn, to bring the game within three.
In the sixth, the shortstop Kondo tripled in Matt Hamel (Siena) to cement the Dragons’ lead at 5-1, which would be the final score.
Kondo finished the game 2-for-2 with one run , one RBI, and two walks, while Fritz finished 2-for-4, also with one run and one RBI.
Dragons starting pitcher, Juilen Arcos (LIU Post), earned the win throwing five quality innings of 3-hit ball. He struck out seven Dutchmen while walking four, and allowing one earned run. He was relieved in the sixth by Kyle Cutler (Johnson and Wales), and later in the ninth by Christian Allegretti (St. Thomas Aquinas).
Cutler threw three innings of shutout ball, while striking out five in the process. Allegretti picked up right where Cutler left off and shut the door in the ninth, recording two of his three outs by way of the K.
Dutchmen starter, D’Anna, went through four innings of work, surrendering four runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out only one batter. Ryan Greco (SUNY Brockport), looked sharp in relief, firing three innings of two-hit ball while striking out six batters. Dalton Harvey (Illinois State) pitched a perfect eighth frame for the Dutchmen, striking out one in the process.
Masterman finished the game 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI, a similar stat-line to his fellow Cardinal, Dunn, who also went 2-for-4 with a walk, stolen base, and the Dutchmen’s lone run.
The Dutchmen will return home on Saturday to face the Amsterdam Mohawks (8-7) in a division rivalry for Solo Cup Giveaway Night courtesy of Albany Clothing & Promotions. |
