Morgan Phillips (College of Charleston)
Derrick Armstrong, Mississippi State- Armstrong, an Albany Dutchmen player from 2013, saw NCAA Tournament action as a pinch-runner in Mississippi State’s victory over Jackson State. Armstrong ran in the ninth inning, and promptly stole second base in the Bulldogs’ 3-1 win. The stolen base was Armstrong’s 14th of the season, a team-high. Armstrong also started in Mississippi State’s first loss to Louisiana-Lafayette.
Thomas Belcher, Indiana- A 2013 member of the Dutchmen, Belcher saw action in both of Indiana’s losses to Stanford. Belcher did not allow a run in his third of an inning out of the bullpen in the first game, firing strikes on all four of his pitches. In the second game, Belcher threw 4.2 innings, allowing just one run in the Hoosiers’ final game of the season. Belcher struck out four hitters in his time on the mound.
Garren Palmer, Georgia Southern- Palmer, who played for the Dutchmen in 2011, reached base in each of Georgia Southern’s three NCAA Tournament games. Palmer recorded an RBI single in the Eagles’ upset victory over Florida State. The first baseman drove in a run in the team’s loss to Kennesaw State, and had one of Georgia Southern’s two hits in a season-ending loss to Alabama.
Morgan Phillips, College of Charleston- An outfielder on the 2012 Dutchmen squad, Phillips helped lead the Cougars to a late-night upset of the Florida Gators in the team’s opening game in the NCAA Tournament. Phillips singled in each of his first two at-bats, as College of Charleston topped Florida 3-2. He also reached base once in the Cougars’ victory over Long Beach State, and drove in a run in the Regional-clinching victory over Long Beach State. Phillips was named to the Gainsville All-Regional Team because of his performance. The Cougars became just the fourth four-seed ever to advance to the Super Regional, where they will battle Texas Tech for a trip to Omaha.
Ryan Welke, College of Charleston- Welke also contributed to the Cougars’ performance in the Gainesville Regional. The 2011 Dutchmen catcher singled in the win over Florida, as well as scoring a run against Long Beach State. He guided the Cougar pitching staff behind the plate to three stellar performances.
